What is the best Cleanser for your skin type?

What is the best Cleanser for your skin type?

Posted by Daphne Walsh on

Cleansing is the first and often most important step in your skincare routine. It cleans the skin of impurities, environmental pollutants, oil, dirt, and makeup, which can all have a negative impact on your skin, causing increased sensitivities, dryness, congestion, and break-outs. I would like to consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to understanding cleansers. Gone are the days when a lotion or cream cleanser was only recommended for dry, sensitive skin and a foam or gel was best suited for oily skin or someone with acne.

Choosing a cleanser that is right for your skin can be confusing; with so many options available, it can be challenging to know where to start. I always suggest to my clients, "the golden rule with any cleanser is to ensure it does not leave your skin feeling 'squeaky-clean' or stripped of natural oils.' Your cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean, soft, hydrated, and ready to receive the next step of your skincare regime.

I always encourage my clients to cleanse in the morning and evening. The morning cleanse is often as basic as refreshing with your face with tepid water, using the jane iredale Magic Mitt. The mitt is made of a soft microfiber that gently cleanses the skin without stripping it of natural oils. For anyone with oily or congested skin, I recommend a purifying cleanser to rebalance the skin's pH and remove excess oil secreted overnight. Your evening regime is a little busier, as this is when we need to ensure the skin is cleansed effectively to remove all traces of daily grime.

With so many options to choose from, let's take a look at some of my top recommendations for perfecting your cleansing regime.

A great cleansing regime starts with pre-cleansing.  The Dual-Action Pre-Cleansing Oil is a 'must have' for all serious skincare enthusiasts. This gentle oil helps to effortlessly break-down surface oil and environmental debris, softening the skin to prepare for skin for your cleansing ritual. Pre-Cleansing oil will leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated with no oily residue.

If you are looking for a quick pick me up, we recommend to use the Skin EssentiA Dual Action Pre-Cleansing Oil combined with the Skin EssentiA Hydrating Clay Masque. Massage the oil into the skin to soften and dissolve impurities, followed by applying the masque over the top and continue to massage for a few minutes. The clay gently polishes the skin, collecting dead skin cells, to leave your skin feeling silky smooth and ready for the next step in your skincare regime.

Cleansing Lotion verses Cleansing Gel?

Generally, a cleansing lotion is more suited to a dryer complexion or more sensitive skin type. Cleansing lotions are formulated with ingredients that help to support the skin's natural barrier function to ensure the skin is comfortable and hydrated.

The Hydra-Intense Cleansing Lotion is our number recommendation for clients who love a rich cream cleansing experience. This deeply nourishing cleanser has been formulated with hydrating ingredients to effectively cleanse impurities while maintaining the skins' natural barrier function. Containing the healing properties of hydrolyzed oats to help calm redness and skin sensitivities, it will leave your skin feeling delicately soft and silky smooth.

The Skin EssentiA Mild Cleansing Lotion is a soft and delicate moisturising cleanser that gently cleanses and detoxifies the skin of impurities while maintaining the skin's natural barrier function. This cleansing lotion leaves the skin feeling soft, fresh, and hydrated.

Foam or gel cleansers are generally considered the best choice for oily skin or problematic skin. However, Cleansing Gels and Foams can be equally hydrating when supported by ingredients such as Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Oats and Xylitol which promotes and controls water flow in the skin.

The Skin EssentiA Low Foaming Cleansing Gel helps gently detoxify and cleanse the skin of oil, surface debris, makeup, and impurities without disrupting the skin's natural barrier function. This low foaming gel cleanser will leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated without the 'squeaky clean' feel often associated with foaming cleansers.

If your concern is oily or congested skin, the Sebu-Wash Gel Cleanser* is perfect for you. This mild foaming cleanser contains a combination of ingredients, including tea tree oil and salicylic acid, to help control and clear excess oil and blemishes, leaving your skin feeling clean and refreshed. * Avoid if allergic to Aspirin

For something super-soft and foamy, you cannot go past one of our top-selling cleansers, the Dermaceutic Advanced Cleanser. This soft, foaming cleanser effectively removes makeup and excess oil to give skin a clean, fresh, and hydrated feel. Advanced Cleanser is recommended for all skin types, including sensitive and dehydrated skin, leaving skin feeling balanced and restored.
